Count Zero

Title: Count Zero

Author: William Gibson

Rating: 8/10

Gibson follows up Neuromancer with Count Zero. Set in the same cyberpunk environment as its predecessor, Count Zero is every bit as confusing, exciting, and futuristic as Neuromancer. The book's chapters are short and steadily cycle between the 3 main characters, giving it a disjunct feeling that derives from the essence of the Gibson world (the discrete moves in cyberspace, the split-second change in circumstances, etc.). It also makes putting the book down hard as almost every chapter is akin to a small cliffhanger. Despite all this, I think I enjoyed Neuromancer a bit more. The disjunct style is very effective but behind it, the plot is less involved than Neuromancer. Count Zero himself was also much less of an interesting character than Case. Arguably the Turner/Angie duo could fill in some adrenaline gaps but Angie is more a plot character than a viewpoint.

Highly enjoyable nonetheless. I'd recommend reading through the entire cyberspace trilogy by Gibson (Neuromancer, Count Zero, and Mona Lisa Overdrive).
