Increasing Complexity
I just bought meself a keyboard and mouse combo. It's wirless so the base station requires a power source. While plugging in this new gadget, I realized that with two surge protectors and an extension cord, I'm still running low on plugs. How could this be? Well...

  1. iPod Adapter
  2. Digicam Adapter
  3. Speakers
  4. Wireless Keyboard/Mouse
  5. Desk halogen lamp
  6. Cellphone charger
  7. Printer/Scanner/Copier
  8. IBM Laptop adapter
  9. Dell Inspiron adapter
  10. 4-port hub
  11. TV
  12. Samsung Home Theater in a Box
  13. Playstation 2

That makes for a whole MESS of wires. I'm amazed that modern people can deal with all this complexity. Case in point: all of the above is in one small area since I use the dell as my media desktop, connected to the tv/theater system, to which the ps2 is also connected. The two laptops are connected by the hub so i can network and remote control from one to the other. The desktop speakers can be patched into the home theater system with a small cable change. The iPod connects to the ibm as does the digicam (one by usb the other by firewire) and the phone would connect by bluetooth if my laptop had it. Ack! Imagine somebody from say 100 years back. Give them even a simple computer set up and how impressed and confounded would they be. F3? QWERTY? Component versus Composite? It'd be like our looking forward to Star Trek-like interface systems. The complexity we deal with everyday in terms of interfaces is staggering. But perhaps it's just that the analog quirks of a wheelbarrow of yesteryears are replaced by a crashing hard drive...

I have always felt sorry for the poor college kid like yourself. If you only had a little money, you could buy another surge protector.

Oh har har. The dude is witty as ever. But sadly, how true. I've been eyeing this holy surge protector of Antioch...
