Got my first earthquake here in Cali while being an aneurysmic insomniac. At first thought the guy above me fell off his bed, then thought he must be doing some heavy dancing to be shaking the building and then realized that if the entire building was shaking hard enough to threaten my wine bottle from falling over, then it's probably an earthquake and not one Swede's midnight dancing fever. Obfuscating while it was happening, somewhat exciting right after the realization, and almost freaky in retrospect: if felt like a car going over railroad tracks...except in all directions, not just forwards. The creaking and groaning sounds of an undulating building didn't help either. But hey cool! I got my first earthquake! I can be all jaded now and be like "yeah, I've been in an earthquake. Psshhhh. Nothing at all to it foo. It is advisable to just chill and let the shizzaking subside, my dear nizzel. Indeed, for shizzel."
So after some research, it seems there was a quake at exactly 5:13AM EST (2:13AM here in SB). Another site describe the epicenter, which seems to have been 10 miles west of Isla Vista (where I live). It places the magnitude at 4.5 but reports the time as 1:57AM Pacific, about 15 minutes before I felt my version. The magnitude seems to match (only 4.5 sounds about right I guess) but the times don't match. Perhaps just a couple of quivers? Made a report and what I felt seems to match the general report for this occurence (anywhere between weak and light for our areas, down to barely felt for LA). I feel all cool now. I'm such a nerd.
