Go Netflix!
And we're off!

Adaptation - Funny, interesting, self-reflexive, overall a fun movie to watch and to think about. Two contrasting Nicolas Cages is great, as are all the references to Being John Malkovich.

Alien - Never saw it, but the movie is far less scary with hindsight. I have no idea what happens in Alien before I saw it but there's enough pop culture in the air so that I know what the alien looks like, and that, well, the alien is coming. Too much skepticism, I brought. Talking like Yoda, I am.

Aliens - Follow up to Alien...I like it a lot better. The story flows along slightly better and gives a point to those pregnant silences. I don't see how Sigourney Weaver is stronger than the queen alien's grip, but like Bishop said "not bad for a human."

The Red Violin - The physical and mental difficulties (impossiblities?) of humping someone and playing virtuoso licks on the violin simultaneously aside, a charming film. The repeated auction scene and the fortune-telling got a bit schticky (and how does Samuel L. Jackson, granted that he is the perennial badass, get off being a grand thief?) but rest was fun. They got Joshua Bell to do the violin solos too.

The English Patient - Dear God why did I wait until now to see this movie??? A bit Far Pavilions like though not quite as epic. Unrelentless sorrow indeed, I loved every 162 minutes of it. The characters are slightly superhuman in their emotional profiles, I think, but all in service of the drama. What better way to mourn the one you love than with a cinematic walk through the desert, carrying your beloved in your arms, wrapped in white sheets? Well probably a whole bunch of things but I wouldn't mind that one either.

Lately, I've watched some Netflix myself, seeing as I"m in NY at the moment...

The vistas in The English Patient are gorgeous! Part of the reason why I'd drop everything if someone gave me a ticket to Tunisia right *now*. But Ralph Fiennes' character is over-the-top, obsessively in love -- from my point of view, SCARily in love!

Luke, unfortunately I do have a stopover on your coast, but it's way way way up in Vancouver. So, hope all is well and stays well with you. Much love and cheers.
