Tim is good for my stomach and free time, but horrible for my wallet =P Hear that Tim?! Not that he reads this site...
So let's see....
- King Arthur - Silly, as expected. Unabashedly American (but not in a good way) and King Arthur's assortment of
archetypesknights are rather international. Not recommended, needless to say, though darn I just said it. - The Terminal - Excellent, as only Tom Hanks can make it. About a guy who gets stuck in an airport for an italicized really long time. It's dramatic, cute, funny, somewhat heartwarming, and just in general fun. Reminds us what innocence and a kind disrepect for established conventions can do (for the better). Oh and Catherine Zeta-Jones happens to be hot. Make that hott.
- I, Robot - Not be mistaken for iRobot, Apple's upcoming line of personal servants or I, Robot the book by Asimov. OK, perhaps that was low but Wild Wild Wobot with Will "wickety wickety wickety" Smith is NOT an adaptation of the book. Nor could it be since the book consists of one continuity but separate stories from therein. So it's off the hook there. But for fans of Asimov's delicious and sophisticated application of the 3 seemingly simple rules of Robotics (which can be paraphrased as "I will be a good robot yay!"), well, you'll be disappointed. Robots in Black takes many of the basic ideas found in I, Robot and uses them as story elements, but not with nearly the same intricacy and intrigue as Asimov invents. It's a somewhat fun romp with some Fresh Prince of Bel-Air type humor inserted in Will Smithy jiggy styles but leaves me wondering why. Asimov did a great job at exposing human psychology through our flawed interpretations of the three very strict rules. The robots don't err. They can't err. When told to get lost, they will literally "get lost" to the best of their abilities. Six Degrees of Roboteration, on the other hand, turns that reverse angle back into a "robots can go bad, humans can come save the world" type of story. Fun, but ultimately lacks substance, like dining on popcorn.
And some gorgeous food as well. Went up to San Francisco today and looked for a shirt for Anita's wedding. Found one, but they don't have my size. So back to the internet. But surrounding shirt-finding and movie seeing (Aye! Robot!), there were two sumptuous meals. To start off the San Francisco mini trip, there was:
- Xing1 Long2 Xiao3 Guan3 (not sure of english name...new dragon little restaurant?) - Near intersection of Stockton and Broadway. *Good* Chinese food in SF Chinatown. Cantonese-based but they seemed to have somewhere near 250 menu items so you'll find something to your fancy there, whether you get all fobbish on them or not. Surely one of the best in SF Chinatown. And at the end of the night was:
- Michaelangeo Caffe - Not sure where it was, exactly (near Beach Blanket Babylon) but I'm at least sure of the name. Great real feel-good Italian food. Also very much recommended. Plus, you get a big bowl of all-you-can eat gummi bears and some cookies at the end of your meal. The ursine chewables are a surprisingly good digestif to the Italian food, whodathunkit.

Your I, Robot comments remind me of a NY Times editorial -- just tried to hunt for the text so that I could stick it here in case anyone was interested, but am too lazy to put too much effort into finding an already archived article. Anyhoo, they said Hollywood's dumb for making robots eeeevil all the time, esp. in adapting Asimov's book, as it was more about the faults of mankind rather than the faults of the machines man created.

Heck yes. It really is a shame. Ironically, for all Hollywood's "robots are inhuman" type bashing, the one key element they leave out of Asimov's conception of the I, Robot universe is the human part of it. What use is studying hypothetical robots if not to further ourselves and how do we further ourselves by staring only at a one-dimensional object and not its reflection through us? Stupid hollywood.

"Oh and Catherine Zeta-Jones happens to be hot. Make that hott."
It looks like Catherine Zeta Jones is taking a stand against her stalker. The stalker's letters suggested Catherine Zeta-Jones would be chopped into pieces "like Sharon Tate was," and referred to the violent deaths of President Kennedy and Nicole Brown Simpson. Crazy people.
