I've always wondered about holodecks in Star Trek. How does civilization advance past the discovery of the holodeck since all of humanity would simultaneously start slacking and wasting away in them? How is it that people on the Enterprise can so casually walk into a holodeck without seeming to be afraid that they're going to walk in on a rather steamy simulation (of sex! not of ironing. Get your minds out of the gutters!). And failing the first two, how do they move around with total freedom in that small room? The entire holographic projection would have move in the opposite direction and cancel out all the movements of the person inside. Some unresolved problems though: What if there are two people in the room and they run in opposite directions? Does one get smacked into a wall? Questions questions, though for a people who can travel faster than our current perceived limit of light speed, I supposed anything is possible (even avoiding ironing [iornic?] fantasies).
But behold. The holodecks of today! According to anime, all catastrophes, destruction of the world, alien invasions, and second comings will happen in Japan. Usually Tokyo. If the Japanese takes this technology any further and starts creating really immersive virtual reality, anime's prediction just may be true. Who's up for wasting away in a virtual world with me? (You know, without the use of drugs...)
