OMG! He's posting again!

I used to be all about an el cheapo Dell laptop but after some experience with those, it just didn't cut it. It was too flimsy and at that time, I didn't feel like taking it all apart to fix the monitor which would flickr, go all white, and then stay there until I smacked it around a little like I did with my ex-girlfriend. I only hit them 'cause I love 'em. Really.

So anyway, I get to grad school and I treat myself to a nice IBM Thinkpad T40. I was an instant convert: the build quality was great, the price fairly reasonable, and everything worked smoothly. And up until about a month ago, the T40 did admirably with never a single blip or problem. The only time I sent it in was because my warranty was about to expire and I wanted to get me a new keyboard/palm rest (which they did) and there was a hairline crack on the front of the case. That's wonderful performance since I do lug my laptop around very frequently and I don't baby it.

Just a couple of weeks ago though I got my first blue screen of death! I thought it was just a temporary thing but after lots of frustrating weeks reading about driver incapabilities and taking apart and putting back together the laptop over and over again, I figued out it was a motherboard problem. Specifically, the graphics card is a bit wonky but since it's integrated right on to the MB, I can' just replace it. The fix?

Buy a new motherboard!

Every other component is working beautifully so I dropped $190 on a new MB (with a slightly faster proc! Pentium M 1.5) and reassmebled everything. Everything works beautifully again! So yes, thinkpad's aren't unbreakable or anything but I expect this $200 investment to extend the life for another 1 or 2 years or so. Much cheaper than buying a new computer! Go ugly ass black bricks!

Let's see. Updates? Uhm...

Got a Trek 1400. Shimano blah blah something wheels blah whatever. But I do loooove the biking, saddle sore though I still am. It's been a bit less than 2 weeks since I've started riding and I just finished a 30 miler yesterday so the distances are much less daunting than I originally thought. Feels great to mix this up with the running.

Going to do the Solvang Century in March

Planning on the San Diego Rock 'n Roll Marathon in June.

Planning to submit (and hopefully get it accepted) another paper or two. One for the National conference next November, one for a local theory conference some time in the spring, and whatever else I might find along the way.

Starting work on the dissertation! It's sooooo hard to get myself to work because I'm a grade a slacker.

Created a new dessert! Tempura glazed apples a la mode with spicy chocolate sauce and frozen apple zest! I don't usually "do" desserts but this one's fun and even "requires" dry ice!

Back to some piano playing for fun.

Some APIs use them, some don't, but I'm a fan of sticking to ISO8601 for date/time. Note, though, that the spec allows two different ways of indicating GMT Offset:

This profile defines two ways of handling time zone offsets:

1) Times are expressed in UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), with a special UTC designator ("Z").
2) Times are expressed in local time, together with a time zone offset in hours and minutes. A time zone offset of "+hh:mm" indicates that the date/time uses a local time zone which is "hh" hours and "mm" minutes ahead of UTC. A time zone offset of "-hh:mm" indicates that the date/time uses a local time zone which is "hh" hours and "mm" minutes behind UTC.

A standard referencing this profile should permit one or both of these ways of handling time zone offsets.

The second option is quite nice and technically contains more info than the first even though both designate the same instant. But conforming to ISO8601 only requires that you handle ONE of those cases, not both. Watch out.

Wow. It's been a while since I've written here eh? I guess my blogs have to be content driven after all. Started running again to train for another marathon (finally!). This time though, I have no Marathon specifically picked out. The idea is to just run. A LOT. And then once I'm used to running a lot of miles every day/week/all the time, try to run a marathon in under 10:00/mile.

Went for a 5 mile run Wednesday night that put me at around 9:30/mile and from experience last time, my long distance mile times didn't change too much since all I was focusing on was increasing distance. And most of my per mile times were around 10:00. The final per mile time of around 10:45 could be chalked up to the ridiculous hills at the big sur, the fact that it was 26 miles, and that I had ITBS and plantar fasciitis going on at the same time. Ideally, I could get my training long run per/mile down to low 9s and go from there.

So, yup. Running again. More speedwork and cross and weight training this time around too. There's a half marathon in about a month in Santa Barbara but with my weekly mileage at somewhere around 15 so far, so it might be a bit soon. I did get up to 12 miles within 4 weeks for the last marathon but...meh...it's supposed to be different this time right?

Well it's been a while. The design of this site stings my eyes now. Yeah, I knew it didn't look great when I first hacked out the template but it was an exercise in CSS. Time to go back to minimalistic type stuff. When I have time.

So...over the past two months I:

Went to Shanghai and ate lots, drank lots, and had a big family reunion-type good time there

Visited Malaysia for the first time (Kuala Lumpur and Melaka) and had lots of fun and ate lots. Also tried Vegemite (uhm....). Thanks to Shryh for showing me around!

Have been doing lots of fire spinning both in Santa Barbara and in China

Have been taking lots of pictures

Speaking of pictures too, I caught the DSLR craze and went and got myself (with generous help from Dad) a DSLR set up with:

Canon Digital Rebel XT

Canon EF 17-40mm F/4 L USM

I also sold my old Sony DSC-F717 to Andre. Funds from that sale (plus a little extra) directly go to its replacement, a Casio Exilim EX-Z750 as an everyday camera with manual controls and which can also double as a camcorder. On a Sandisk Ultra II 1GB SD card, it can record over an hour's worth of tv-quality video!

Plans for the future? Lots of photography and fire dancing (and the combination thereof). The San Diego Rock 'n Roll Marathon. Finish my qualifying exams. Start my dissertation. Et. Cete. Ra.

Brakes are important, but you knew that right? They're also pretty expensive, especially on sports cars. The rotors usually come in plain, dilled (holes), slotted (deep grooves along the rotors), and a combo of the previous two. They don't help you stop that much faster but they do vent heat and gases built up during heavy breaking a bit better than normal rotors, which means that while you can't take race them on the track reliably, you can at least drive more aggressively and do one or two intro track days on them. The plain ones are usually around 60-70 (per rotor, on my car). Then add in pads (at around 50 for a set), and you're looking at about $400 for replacements all around.

But ask around on forums and what do I get? "getcoolparts.com"! The name sounds suspicious but the service and pricing is top notch. OEM rotors were on sale down to about 44 for front and 51 for rears. Pads were about 33 for a set of fronts and 24 for a set of rears. Great prices! And there were no shipping charges too! Nor any tax for CA residents! Glorious!

About to get on a long series of flights to China. The first leg is LAX to SFO at 5:25 but the next flight leaves at 1AM from SFO, unfortunately, so I've got quite a bit of a wait in between. Chance to catch up on work perhaps. Then it's on to Seoul (I'm going on Asiana) and then to Shanghai around 10AM the morning of 8/4 (7PM on 8/3 California time). The entire trip takes about 26 hours, though that's including the ridiculous wait at SFO. I've got my Excedrin handy!

My car is pictures above. OK, not quite. The car pictured above is "Phoenix Yellow" and is, presumably, a 2002 M Roadster, but close enough (mine is 1998, metallic black). A few places have been reporting recently that it is the #2 most stolen car in the US by percentage. See MSN's version. The problem with this is that for the M Roadster, one out of every two hundred registered cars are stolen. Given that there were less than 800 M Roadster made and sold in the US in 2002, that produces an estimate of about four cars stolen. Hardly something to worry about. As far as theft is concerned, I'll take my chances with a 2002 BMW M Roadster over a 2002 Honda Accord any day!

I'm becoming more Asian day by day, I swear. My hair's getting spikier, I'm going to be visiting the motherland soon, and I've got a RAZR now. Old phone has a cracked screen (though it still works) but the AT&T plan (known internally at Cingular as "Cingular Legacy" or "Customers about whom we could not give a fuck even if we were to try") was a bit annoying. And thank heavens for Chinese phone dealers in the bay area: 1 year contract, free phone, $36 activation fee, $27 tax, and I'm out the door with an unlocked phone (can use it in China!). Supposedly Cisco corporate discount takes away the activation fee and discounts the monthly bill further. woot indeed.

A little bit behind the times here but finally saw Sin City. Excellent fun!

The stars are out in full force here. Mickey Rourke leads a powerful opening as a larger-than life brute. Elijah wood is suitably creepy as a straight-cut bible thumping fluorescent cannibal. Benicio del Toro masters the macabre and the humorous at the same time as Jackie Boy despite beind dead in half of his scenes. Clive Owen is actually good as the self-righteous hero, though being called Lancelot in Sin City must be slightly ironic after being King Arthur in the, well, shitty King Arthur. The girls are masterful as well. Alexis Bedel may be a bit type cast (the innocent helpless one here) because of her looks but it's no crime. Alba doesn't get much screen time and doesn't exactly steal the scenes but she's gorgeous. Bruce Willis acts a bit too much like he always acts but it works though I question Alba's infatuation with him. I guess it's a movie. I forgive her. Even Michael Madsen of Reservoir Dogs fame pops up, along with plenty of other stars in minor roles: Michael Clarke Duncan, Josh Hartnett, Nick Stahl (OK, Terminator 3, but still), Devon Aoki (she of polyethnic but Japanese looks, landing the role of the much lusted-after video game character Kasumi from the upcoming Dead or Alive movie adaptation).

It's gory and violent, no doubt about that, but here's a movie where violence is not the end but a means. Sin City is a horrific city and it would not be congruent to tell such stories as exists within it without violence but that's exactly it: violence is the backdrop. It forms part of the fabric of the story just as much as the mostly black and white stylized visuals of the movie. It's not bashful, apologetic, or reserved. It's carelessly enthusiastic, wears its heart on its bloody sleeve, and is almost obliviously confident of its own story to tell. Even though Tarantino was a guest director, his influence and geeky zealousness is tangible and much appreciated. As an adaptation of a "comic book", Sin City far surpasses anything the standard Marvel/D.C. fare has to offer. But even better, as a movie, it is just plain good. Haven't had this much fun in the theaters for a while.

And yes, if you're a straight guy, you probably will have to shift every time Jessica Alba comes on to the screen. Bruce Willis is one fucking lucky bastard is all I can say.
